Cubic Foot

A unit of volume equal to a 1-foot × 1-foot × 1-foot cube, or 1,728 cubic inches. Abbreviated cu ft or ft³.

Why it matters

Cubic feet measure storage volume in the US — appliances, storage units, and landscaping materials (mulch, gravel, concrete) are all sold or rated by the cubic foot. To convert to cubic meters, multiply by 0.0283.

Examples

  • A standard front-load washing machine drum is 4–5 cu ft.
  • A 10×10×8 ft storage unit has 800 cu ft of space.
