Fluid Ounce

A unit of volume equal to 29.574 milliliters in the US customary system (1/8 of a US cup).

Why it matters

US fluid ounces appear on beverage labels and in cocktail recipes. One US cup contains 8 fluid ounces. Note that the UK fluid ounce (28.413 ml) differs slightly from the US fluid ounce (29.574 ml).

Examples

• A standard US can of soda is 12 fl oz = 354.88 ml.
• 1 US cup = 8 US fl oz = 236.588 ml.
