Square Foot

A unit of area equal to a 1-foot × 1-foot square, or 144 square inches. Abbreviated sq ft or ft².

Why it matters

Square footage is the standard area measurement for real estate, flooring, and paint in the United States. A 10 ft × 12 ft bedroom is 120 sq ft. To convert to square meters, divide by 10.764.

Examples

• A standard single-car garage is about 200–240 sq ft.
• 1 sq ft = 929 cm² = 0.0929 m².
