Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — expressed as minutes per mile (min/mi) or minutes per kilometer (min/km). This calculator solves all three pace problems in one tool: find your pace from a known distance and duration, project a finish time for a target race, or calculate how far you ran in a given time.

The formula

Pace, time, and distance are related by simple division:

pace (min/unit) = total time (min) ÷ distance
finish time (min) = pace (min/unit) × distance
distance = total time (min) ÷ pace (min/unit)

To convert between min/mile and min/km: divide by 1.60934 (or multiply by 0.62137). To convert pace to speed: speed (units/hr) = 60 ÷ pace (min/unit).

Practical examples

Example 1 — Find pace from a recent run: You ran 5 miles in 47 minutes and 30 seconds (47.5 minutes total). Pace = 47.5 ÷ 5 = 9:30 min/mile (= 5:54 min/km).

Example 2 — Project a half marathon finish time: Your training pace is 10:15 min/mile. Race distance: 13.1 miles. Time = 10.25 × 13.1 = 134.3 minutes = 2 hours 14 minutes 18 seconds.

Example 3 — Find distance from a timed run: You ran for 45 minutes at a 9:00 min/mile pace. Distance = 45 ÷ 9 = 5.0 miles (= 8.05 km).

Common mistakes

Confusing pace and speed. Pace is time per distance (9:00/mi); speed is distance per time (6.7 mph). They're reciprocals — a faster runner has a lower pace number and a higher speed number.

Forgetting seconds in the total. A run of 47 minutes 30 seconds is 47.5 minutes, not 47. Enter the hours, minutes, and seconds fields separately to avoid arithmetic errors.

Applying one unit's pace to another unit's distance. A 6:00 min/km pace is not the same as 6:00 min/mile. 6:00 min/km ≈ 9:39 min/mile. Use the unit toggle to stay consistent.

Averaging paces arithmetically. Two segments of 8:00 min/mile and 10:00 min/mile do not average to 9:00 min/mile unless the distances are equal. If one segment is twice as long, it should be weighted accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is running pace?
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically expressed as minutes per mile (min/mi) or minutes per kilometer (min/km). A pace of 9:00 min/mi means it takes 9 minutes to run one mile.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile to get miles per hour. For example, a 10:00 min/mi pace equals 60 ÷ 10 = 6.0 mph. To convert min/km to km/h, divide 60 by the pace in minutes per km.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
A comfortable beginner pace is typically 10–13 minutes per mile (6:12–8:03 min/km). The right starting pace is one where you can hold a conversation — not a specific number.
How do I calculate my finish time for a race?
Multiply your pace by the race distance. For a half marathon (13.1 miles) at a 10:00 min/mi pace: 10 × 13.1 = 131 minutes = 2 hours 11 minutes.
How do I convert between min/mile and min/km?
To convert min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.60934. To convert min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.60934. For example, 6:00 min/km ÷ 1.60934 ≈ 9:39 min/mi.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace measures time per distance (e.g., 9 min/mi); speed measures distance per time (e.g., 6.7 mph). They represent the same movement — just with numerator and denominator swapped. Running communities typically use pace; cycling communities often use speed.
