Age Calculator

The age calculator returns your exact age in years, months, and days by tracking calendar month boundaries — not just dividing total days by an average. Enter a date of birth and an "as of" date (defaults to today). The result accounts for different month lengths and leap years.

The formula

Age is calculated by counting forward from the birth date to the reference date in whole calendar units:

1. years = full years elapsed (birthday not yet passed → subtract 1)
2. months = remaining months after subtracting full years
3. days = remaining days after subtracting full years and months

If the day component goes negative (e.g. born on the 28th, reference day is the 15th), the calculator borrows one month and adds the previous month's day count.

Practical examples

Example 1 — Straightforward birthday

Born: March 10, 2000. As of: May 28, 2026.

Full years: 26. Remaining months: 2 (March → May). Remaining days: 18 (March 10 → May 28).

Age: 26 years, 2 months, 18 days

Example 2 — Borrowing days across month boundary

Born: January 31, 2000. As of: March 15, 2026.

March 15 − January 31 requires borrowing: take Feb 2026 (28 days). Remaining days: 28 − 31 + 15 = 12. Months: 1 (February). Years: 26.

Age: 26 years, 1 month, 12 days

Example 3 — Age as of a future date

Born: July 4, 1990. As of: July 4, 2030.

Age: 40 years, 0 months, 0 days — a milestone birthday.

Common mistakes

Using total days ÷ 365. This method introduces error because years are 365 or 366 days and months have 28–31 days. The calendar-boundary method is the standard legal and medical convention.

Assuming February 29 birthdays add a year only on leap years. Legal and social convention typically counts March 1 (or February 28) as the birthday anniversary in non-leap years. This calculator uses February 28 as the equivalent.

Ignoring the "as of" date. Age is always relative to a reference date. For legal purposes (contracts, pension eligibility), you may need age as of a specific past or future date, not today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the age calculator work?
Enter a birth date and an 'as of' date (defaults to today). The calculator computes the full years, remaining months, and remaining days between the two dates.
Can I calculate age as of a future or past date?
Yes. Change the 'As of date' field to any date you want — past or future. This is useful for legal or administrative purposes.
Does the calculator handle leap year birthdays (Feb 29)?
Yes. In non-leap years, a Feb 29 birthday is counted as Feb 28 for the purposes of determining the age anniversary.
Why is the age in days different from other calculators?
Age in days varies because this calculator counts the precise calendar days between the birth date and the reference date, including the actual lengths of each month and leap years.
Can I use this to calculate a pet's age?
Yes — any date of birth and reference date can be entered. The calculator shows the exact time elapsed regardless of the subject.
