Diaper usage is highest in the newborn stage and decreases as babies grow. Newborns typically use 10–12 diapers per day; by six months, usage drops to 6–8 per day. These are general estimates — actual usage varies by feeding method, individual baby, and health.
Average diaper usage by age
| Age | Diapers per day | Diapers per month (est.) |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn (0–1 month) | 10–12 | 300–370 |
| 1–5 months | 8–10 | 240–310 |
| 5–9 months | 6–8 | 180–250 |
| 9–12 months | ~6 | ~180 |
| 12–18 months | 5–6 | 150–185 |
| 18–24 months | 4–5 | 120–155 |
| 24–36 months | 3–5 | 90–155 |
Total diapers in the first year
Most babies use approximately 2,000–2,500 diapers in their first year. Newborn-stage usage accounts for a disproportionate share — the first three months alone often add up to 800–1,000 diapers.

How to stock up before baby arrives
- Newborn size: Buy 1–2 packs (100–200 diapers). Babies over 8.5 lbs at birth may skip NB entirely.
- Size 1: Stock 3–4 packs (about 300–400 diapers) as your main supply for the first few months.
- Avoid over-buying any single size. Babies move through sizes faster than expected, and unused diapers in the wrong size are wasted.
Signs a diaper no longer fits
- Red marks around the thighs or waist
- Leaking from the sides or top
- The back waistband sits below the belly button
When leaks happen frequently despite correct application, size up rather than changing brands.
