Kids Shoe Size Chart

Kids shoe sizes are assigned by foot length, not age. Two children of the same age can differ by two full shoe sizes. Always measure your child's foot before buying — especially for online purchases — rather than relying on their current size or age alone.

How to measure a child's foot

  1. Have the child stand on a piece of paper (standing spreads the foot to its full length).
  2. Place their heel against a wall and mark the tip of the longest toe.
  3. Measure from the wall to the mark in inches or centimeters.
  4. Measure both feet and use the longer measurement.
  5. Add 0.5 inch (1.25 cm) for growing room.

When to re-measure

Children's feet grow quickly — check size every 2–3 months for children under 3, and every 3–6 months for older children. A shoe that fit 3 months ago may now be restricting. Signs a child has outgrown their shoes include toes touching the front, redness on the foot after removing shoes, or complaints of pinching.

Width matters too

US kids shoes often come in widths: M (medium/standard), W (wide), and occasionally N (narrow). A child with wide feet who wears standard-width shoes may experience discomfort even if the length is correct. When in doubt, choose a half-size larger and consider a wide-width option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my child's foot for shoe size?
Have the child stand on a piece of paper with their heel against a wall. Mark the longest toe, then measure from the wall to the mark in inches or centimeters. Measure both feet and use the larger measurement.
What is the difference between toddler and youth shoe sizes?
Toddler sizes (labeled T or C) typically go from size 1 to 13. Youth sizes (labeled Y or K) start at size 1 and go up to size 7 or higher. A US toddler size 13 and youth size 1 are approximately the same foot length — youth sizes simply restart the numbering.
Do kids shoe sizes run the same as adult sizes?
No. Youth sizes 1–7 are smaller than adult sizes 1–7. A youth size 7 is roughly equivalent to a women's size 8.5 or men's size 7. Once kids reach youth size 6–7, they may be able to wear adult shoes.
How often should I check my child's shoe size?
Children's feet grow quickly — every 2–3 months for babies under 2, and every 3–6 months for older children. Always re-measure before buying shoes rather than assuming the previous size still fits.
