Area Converter

The square meter is the SI unit of area. This converter covers eight units spanning everyday real estate, land measurement, and science. 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m² and 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (exact, NIST SP 811). Type any value and all others update live; click any result to set it as the new input.

The formula

All conversions route through the square meter as base:

target = value × (fromUnit_to_m² / toUnit_to_m²)

For square feet to square meters:

m² = ft² × 0.09290304

For acres to hectares:

ha = ac × (4046.8564224 / 10000) = ac × 0.404686

Squared length units follow from the exact linear definitions: since 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² exactly.

Practical examples

Example 1 — Comparing home listings (sq ft to m²)

A US listing shows a house at 2,200 sq ft. A buyer from Germany wants the area in square meters.

2200 × 0.09290304 = 204.39 m²

Example 2 — Agricultural land (acres to hectares)

A farm is listed as 45 acres. An EU agricultural subsidy form requires hectares.

45 × 0.404686 = 18.21 ha

Example 3 — Country size comparison (sq miles to km²)

Texas is approximately 268,596 square miles. Convert to square kilometers.

268,596 × 2.58999 = 695,662 km²

Common mistakes

Mistake 1 — Assuming 1 sq yd ≈ 1 m²

A square yard is 0.836 m² — about 16% smaller than a square meter. A room measured in square yards will give a meaningfully smaller number than the same room in square meters.

Mistake 2 — Confusing acre and hectare

An acre is about 4047 m²; a hectare is 10,000 m² — nearly 2.5 times larger. A headline reading "50 hectares" is describing a much larger area than "50 acres."

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in a square meter?
Approximately 10.7639 square feet. Since 1 meter = 3.28084 feet, 1 m² = 3.28084² ≈ 10.7639 ft². Equivalently, 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (exact).
How many acres are in a hectare?
Approximately 2.47105 acres per hectare. One hectare is 10,000 m²; one acre is 4046.856 m², so 10,000 ÷ 4046.856 ≈ 2.471 acres.
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet. This is the standard US definition: 1 acre = 43,560 ft².
How many square miles are in a square kilometer?
Approximately 0.3861 square miles per square kilometer. One sq mi = 2,589,988 m²; one km² = 1,000,000 m², so 1,000,000 ÷ 2,589,988 ≈ 0.3861.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
An acre (≈ 4047 m²) is the unit used in the US and UK; a hectare (10,000 m²) is the metric equivalent used internationally. One hectare is about 2.47 acres.
